New Exhibit Dedication – Mr. Brad Whitney and Family
have graciously donated a vintage Nashua City Hall Sign. The
unveiling will start this months meeting.
Fashion Embellishing Textiles - The Nashua Historical Society
expands the Speare Museum exhibit, “Hats Off Nashua!” Highlighted
in the exhibit are the creations of Nashua’s own milliners,
the Bouthillier sisters, Gabriella and Cecile. The exhibit
has been enlarged and includes men’s hats as well. Our
guest speaker is costume designer and maker, Margaret Koelliker.
Margaret specializes in men’s hats, particularly, pirate
hats of the 1600 and 1700’s. She has designed for Disney-MGM
Studios and the Discovery Channel.

Stepping Back into the One-Room Schoolhouse – Susan Fineman
will help us turn back the hands of time. Her photographic
presentation explores the history of the one-room schoolhouse
like the Nashua District #1 Schoolhouse in the middle of the
Old South Burying Ground. Mrs. Fineman serves as schoolmarm
many days at this 1841 restored school. She is also on the
Board of Directors of the Country School Association of America
and has presented various schoolhouse programs locally and
at national conferences.

Friday, May 15 – 7:30p.m. Robert Sampson will present “Cinders,
Railroad Tracks and a Receipt for Pillowcases”. A selection
of items linking Mine Falls Gate House with the Nashua Manufacturing
Co. will be exhibited.
Saturday, May 16 – Abbot-Spalding House Tours – 10:00a.m. & 1:00p.m.
Sunday, May 17 – Area Walking Tour with Catherine Poulin
and her AP History Class – Call the Society for times.

Manhole Auction Day – An auction of Nashua Foundry triangular
manhole covers will be held to benefit the Nashua Historical
Society. According to our research this cover shape is unique
to Nashua, NH and New Zealand! At 200lbs and more and in a
variety of conditions these covers would make a wonderful addition
to a garden path! George Michaels will be auctioneer.

A History of Nashua: Burque Jewelers– Ken
Mermer and Louise Burque Mermer will be recounting the story
of their
family
owned shop. Burque Jewelers opened its doors on November
8, 1909 by A. U. Burque on 84 Pearl Street. Since then the
business has survived moving and fire. Celebrating its 100th
anniversary in Nashua, we enthusiastically welcome this prominent
family to share their story.

Our National Thanksgiving: With Thanks to President Lincoln
and Mrs. Hale by Steve and Sharon Wood
This evening
we will have a first-person historical presentation by the
Woods.
Sarah Hale tells of her 30 year effort to have Thanksgiving
made a national holiday. Then President Lincoln reads the
official proclamation. The beginnings of this festive feast
will be retold just in time for our 2009 version! The Nashua
Historical Society thanks the New Hampshire Humanities Council
for its help in bringing the history of Thanksgiving to life.
